Topic > My intent to study in Global Studies Major

My interest and attitude towards international relations and global studies began when I was in a middle school in South Korea. Every time I turned on the TV, I often saw North Korean ICBM test launches as front-page news. At that point I would ask myself why we can't join together. However, reading articles about it, I realized that it was not just a problem, but an economic, social and political concern. Therefore, I want to look behind the headlines and have a deeper understanding of world politics, foreign affairs and international security. Secondly, I firmly believe that we need to support the LGBT community. In eighth grade I was assigned a project on sexual orientation. I learned that many teenagers are bullied and are four times more likely to commit suicide than heterosexual teenagers. Since then I started to have a great interest in the LGBT community. In my opinion, everyone should have the same right to be free from violence and discrimination; and violence against LGBT people is becoming a serious problem around the world. For example, on June 12, 2016, a shooting occurred at a gay nightclub in Orlando and 49 people were killed. When I learned about the LGBT community, it touched my heart and made me want to share it internationally. I also had the great opportunity to learn about different cultures. I attended an international school from kindergarten to middle school and these experiences helped me make friends internationally and learn different points of view. Say no to plagiarism. Additionally, I am eager to study how my country influences others and how they are connected on the global stage. Due to my international background and education, I believe that Ritsumeikan University offers the best opportunity for me to acquire the skills needed to work. One of my proudest moments was when I formed a dance team with my friends for extracurricular activities. Being the president of my high school dance team helped grow my confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. My school is a Korean school in Japan, however there are more Japanese students than Korean students. Therefore, I thought it would be a great opportunity for this club to spread my culture and create stronger bonds between people at school as we practice together. I also got to understand everyone's opinions in our groups and improve the quality of the club. The second experience I am proud of is when I was chosen as a school representative to participate in the Jeju Youth Forum in my first year of high school in Japan. Students from all over the world participate in the Jeju Youth Forum, and participants discuss global issues and share their point of view. We were divided into 5 different panels and started discussing our problems in our respective countries. By working with my group, I gained a deeper understanding of different perspectives on everything from economic issues to the environment. Additionally, we worked together to create a presentation and video to raise public awareness. Furthermore, by working together, we got to know each other and different cultures. Please note: this is just an example..
