The dystopian future of the NeuromancerWhen reading a text like this it is possible to look at it through the formalist approach and grasp aspects from different perspectives. In HCAL it instructs the reader to analyze a specific text by seeing its setting, certain styles, imagery, form, and plot. In the book Neuromancer by William Gibson you can see all these approaches. The novel is set in the future and as it will be depicted by Gibson. Every location is dark and gloomy with an illusion of dystopia; despair and unhappiness. Gibson's structure is very difficult to follow, for example how he is repetitive in the description of people and the color pink. Neuromancer, a book that brings to life the belief of the future, talks about the use of technology and how advanced it will be. Gibson illustrates a dystopian place, where everything is dark and full of desperation. There seems to be no control over people and who they kill. Where all the dystopia occurs is in cyberspace. The opening line seems to be Gibson's way of preparing the reader for what's to come; "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." (Gibson 3) Here you see the images used by Gibson. It begins by bringing death and dismay into the reader's mind. You can imagine a black and blurry television because the channel is not tuned, as is the sky. This has nothing to do with our sky; blue and bright. A bit like that of a gloomy and rainy day, black and unattractive. Later in the book Gibson talks about places where people live and sleep, places called "coffins". He describes the dimensions of the coffin, "the r... the center of the paper... the repetition of the color pink to describe things, brings a sort of humanistic quality to the work. It shows that despite everything the characters in the story live in cyberspace and have human qualities. Dealing with this book by all these angels leads to a new outcome of the novel, Gibson sets the book from the beginning with the scene of dystopia and continues it throughout the entire novel The greatest image of dystopia that I found in this novel, all the deaths that occur without a second thought Using the formalist approach to locate these certain images in the novel, helps the reader to see what exactly is happening in readers' minds as they proceed; the image of DYSTOPIA.
