If you were guilty of a crime you had to be hanged in front of the people of your city. In today's world this would never happen, especially in California. You have the opportunity, under the law, to get a lawyer, whether you are poor or rich. There is a system that the government has put in place to see if you are guilty of your crime or not. You also don't have people yelling and screaming at you and telling you that you deserve to die for your crime.
