The consequences of this lead to prisoners being dangerous, unpredictable and unstable due to the fear of prison. To combat this phenomenon, inmates benefit from the provision of habilitation services and treatment programs. Habilitation services aim to provide the inmate with education and professional competence. Education helps reduce crime by promoting a sense of investment in society. Job skills benefit prisoners because by securing a job and remaining drug-free, recidivism rates appear to be reduced. Treatment programs are beneficial to inmates because they change the way the inmate behaves, thinks, and helps break free from addictions. Through the use of therapy and counseling, prisons aim to change the behavior that led an individual to commit crimes and to reshape the way the offender thinks and acts.
