According to the Free Dictionary, redemption means liberation upon payment of a ransom; save. Redemption is a very human thing, and most of us feel the need to redeem ourselves for something we feel guilty about; for this reason, redemption is a widely used topic in many books. This makes the reader feel a greater connection to the book and its characters. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is an example of a book that includes this topic. The author uses the idea of redemption a lot throughout the book to give it special importance and meaning. Many characters regret many of the actions they have taken in the past, actions that in a violent city like 1980s Afghanistan can create a great impact on a person's life. Hosseini consistently presents a major theme of redemption in The Kite Runner; although redemption cannot change the events of the past, it can bring peace to someone who regrets those events. One of the characters that helps demonstrate this theme is Amir. Amir feels the need to redeem himself towards Baba because his mother died while giving birth to him, so he thinks the main reason Baba hates him is because his mother's death was partly his fault. Because of this, Amir thinks that if he wins the kite competition, his father will hate him less and will give more importance to the kite competition, forgetting his hatred towards Amir. This event is not only the event that “redeems” Amir for killing his mother, but it is also the same event that leads to most of the story's twist. Amir allows this event, which he later regrets the most, due to the price he was trying to give Baba, the last fallen kite for his glory. When Hassan spins the kite for Amir and later meets Assef, Amir lets Hassan get raped because he wanted... middle of paper... to change the event. In The Kite Runner, although Amir won the kite competition, his mother still remained dead, although Baba was loving and caring towards Amir. Baba was not entirely proud. Although Baba treated Amir harshly and paid Hassan expensive gifts, Hassan was still the son of another woman who was not his wife. Although Amir saved Sohrab and adopted him, Hassan was still raped and killed. Redemption doesn't change what happened but it brings closure and peace to those events and the guilt involved in them.
