Astrid Ndong English 1302P. HoltonResearch Paper 4 Lost Soul "A Rose For Emily" by William Faulkner is a short story about a woman named Emily Grierson whose life had been controlled by her father. He also had to deal with his own mental abuse resulting from his father's domineering personality. The result of her not living her father's life and authority results in Emily's inability to interact with society and have a normal life. The central idea of this story is that there is a time in life when people should let go of the past and live like parents to have a healthy life and be happy. Faulkner presents the character of Emily as a dominant and headstrong woman. The townspeople refuse to confront her about the smell coming from her house. However, they put lime to manage the smell. “So the next night, after midnight, four men crossed Miss Emily's lawn and crept through the house…opened the cellar door and sprayed lime there, and in all the outbuildings” (Faulkner 264). Her attitude is also presented when the pharmacist gave her arsenic even though she had not given him a valid reason for its use. Emily was trying to find a replacement for her father's death and Homer was the authority figure for it. She had such a strong love for Homer that she wanted to have him by her side forever; for this reason he later decides to kill him and keep the body in his house. No one questioned the cause of Homer's death, even though he disappeared and was found dead in Faulkner's use of Emily, this time period gave the reader an understanding of the values and beliefs of the characters in the story. The class system of the time was well displayed. A black woman could not walk down the street without an apron. Emily lived in an old house. “It was a big boxy house that had once been white…” (Faulkner 262). The house represents his inner emotions and hatred of change. The house went from being a prestigious and luxurious white house to a now decadent house. This could be something comparable to Emily's life because at one point in her life she was happy as if the house was once beautiful and splendid; and now Emily is a depressed person. The setting also tells us how isolated Emily is. The neighborhood was once very populated, but as the story describes she is now the only person living there. The rest of the city is changing their lifestyle but she tries to keep things exactly the same. The house represents his place of safety because it does not let anyone or the sun pass through
