Topic > Essay on Racial Inequality Theory - 1081

In this essay we will discuss the theories of racial inequality. Racial inequality occurs when people have greater access to different resources based specifically on race. A race is a group of people who share the same physical characteristics. I will provide a summary of the article. I will also provide an evaluation of the arguments he makes. Then I will give my reaction to what he said and finally present an alternative argument. The author provides some theories to explain why racial inequality exists and how it continues to exist. The first set of theories are the deficiency theories. Deficiency theories state that “racial minorities occupy a lower economic, social, and political status due to certain factors. The other deficiency is social structure and states that inequality is caused by the social structure of the group. The final deficiency theory is cultural and argues that the cause of inequality lies in the cultural traits that the minority possesses. The next big theory “focuses on prejudice and discrimination as sources of minority inequality.” This theory places the blame on the majority. An example of this is that white prejudice leads to discrimination against blacks. The conditions that black people are left in cause them to make white prejudice even stronger and this cycle is what keeps inequality consistent. The other is that “employees have a taste for discrimination”. The third main theory is structural discrimination and with this inequality is caused by disadvantage in the social structure. The author also exposes his theory, namely internal colonialism. The dominant group is said to exploit the subordinate group for gain. He also talks about Marxist theories that deal with inequality such as labor market segmentation and class segmentation. The central issues under discussion are the De jure racial means that are in place due to laws such as Jim Crow and separate but equal. In fact it just means that it happened without the involvement of the law, for example whenever a large amount of blacks move into a community, all the whites try to move in to feel safer. Another reason could be that white people portray an image of the minority in a certain way to try to control them and the way they act. The last to have a gender and this could lead to some inequality as gender roles are already defined and people simply expect more things from a different gender. An example would be men who are expected to be strong and hide their emotions while women are passive and nurturing. I am convinced of the argument made because of how in depth inequality is explained
