Henry Tam and the Case of the MGI Team - Top Management ProblemOn the surface, the seven-member MGI team composed of Henry Tam and Dana Soiman, both current MBA students at 'HBS , Alex Sartakov – a student of Berklee College of Music, Dav Clar – a graduate student of MIT, and Alexander (Sasha) Gimpelson, Igor Tkachenko and Roman Yakub – the founders of MGI, seem like an ideal team, in which each member brings diverse experiences and technical expertise to help with the business plan competition at HBS. However, as we will see in this article, interpersonal dynamics, lack of clear leadership, leading to unclear team goals and individual roles, and lack of healthy group norms, contribute to an ineffective team process in MGI. With the deadline less than three weeks away and the team without even a first draft of a business plan, Henry is certain that the team would miss the deadline if it continued to function as it has so far. Case Analysis Team process is defined as the behaviors and interactions of team members, which occur over time. It is through this process that all the members' skills and knowledge, together with other inputs, functioning in the group environment, produce an output. MGI's team process seems ineffective, causing many conflicts between subgroups of the MGI team and an inability to complete the business plan. At the “launch” of the team in Mellon Hall on the HBS campus, it was clear that the team had no specific role for each of the members, nor was there a clear leadership agreement. “…It seemed to me that Sasha saw our role as…paper medium…moving forward. Henry and Sasha should come up with a comprehensive list of tasks, grouped by short-term versus long-term goals. To meet the deadline, each member's role should be more defined and tasks should be assigned based on the background and strengths of the team members. Based on the members' experiences, Henry and Dana should work on the business plan; Igor and Roman should provide musical expertise; Dav, Sasha and Igor should work on the technical aspects of product design and paten application; Alex should provide knowledge of the music industry. In summary, Henry should take responsibility by leading the group to make a decision on the business plan and matching tasks with appropriate skills, although he may have to lead under Sasha as a figurehead..
