In the novel Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, the main character, Pip, undergoes a huge character change. I would like to explore with you the major incidents that occurred in Pip's childhood that contribute to his change from an innocent child to someone consumed by false values and snobbery. Pip's transition into snobbery is, I believe, constant from the moment he first meets Miss Havisham and Estella. Even before that, Pip began to fall from innocence when he robbed his sister to feed and free “his” convict. But it wasn't easy for young Pip as his conscience played with him when he heard the floorboards screaming in a vain attempt to alert Mrs Joe. It is obvious that Pip did not feel comfortable performing this gesture for "his" inmate, as he thought a little before taking the pork pie, which Magwitch enjoyed so much. At Satis House it is almost immediately clarified to him by the language of Estella, who considers him inferior. It is here that he meets a girl for the first time with whom he will fall madly in love. This is where he is just called boy. This is where he forms his “Great Expectations.” From these experiences Pip discovers what he considers polite society, but Satis House is a place where society is anything but polite. This is exemplified by Estella's blatant disrespect for Pip's feelings; she points out to him for the first time his defects such as “coarse hands…. thick boots” and the fact that he is nothing more than “a common journeyman”. This not only highlights Pip's flaws, but also leads him to become aware of Joe's. Estella is the major incident in Pip's life that ultimately leads to his hateful and despicable behavior in the future. This is due to his love for her, even after their first meeting he describes Estella as "very nice" but "very offensive". Unperturbed by this description, Estella continues her shameful treatment of the impressionable young boy when he breastfeeds, and treats him as if he were an animal, continuing to address him like an animal, not bothering to learn his name, still referring as a boy. She confuses him too; when he argues with the young Herbert Pocket he is allowed to kiss the beautiful girl, but then she slaps him, rejecting and shocking him..
