LocationThe location of New France was North America. North America was a French-colonized area that stretched from New Earth to Hudson Bay to the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico. All the territory was divided into 5 different colonies and those colonies were: Canada, Acadia, Hudson Bay, New Newfoundland (Plaisance) and Louisiana. Why did colonists come to New France? Some colonists came for work and others came because the king would give them money. For example “les Filles du Roi”. “Les files du roi” were around 800-900 young single French women aged between 15 and 30 who arrived alone or were recruited by the king because there were barely any women and the king wanted to continue to populate the New France. The women themselves would find a man and see if he got along, if so they would get married and the king would pay them to have large families. Another example: Some settlers also arrived because of their interests in North America, such as the desire to trade for spices, skills, and jewelry. Male settlers also came because they needed a job or to make a living with something. In the 1400s European countries tried to find new water routes to Asia which led to their discovery by the Americans. Dwellings and Shelters Homes in New France were commonly built of felled lumber or rough stone, solid, squat buildings, usually measuring about twenty by forty feet or so with a single door. The roofs were very steep with one or two dormer windows on either side. The eaves also protruded well over the walls and behind each house there was a storage room. Most residents had their ovens placed a good distance behind the house, about 4 or 5 feet off the ground. Most of the time the inhabitant marked off a small area of land surrounding the house or shed, barn or storeroom (etc.) with a fence of stacked stones or split cross-beams and planted his vegetable garden in one corner. In the house on the main floor there were usually one or two rooms but never more than three. When the door was first opened, it led to a huge room in the house. It opened into the living room, dining room, and kitchen together, but the room was divided, with the kitchen separated from the rest.
