In the 1400s European countries tried to find new water routes to Asia which led to their discovery by the Americans. Dwellings and Shelters Homes in New France were commonly built of felled lumber or rough stone, solid, squat buildings, usually measuring about twenty by forty feet or so with a single door. The roofs were very steep with one or two dormer windows on either side. The eaves also protruded well over the walls and behind each house there was a storage room. Most residents had their ovens placed a good distance behind the house, about 4 or 5 feet off the ground.
