New Wark or New York A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is a story of great sacrifices made for the sake of princes. There are many examples of this throughout the book done by many characters, but some or more obvious than others. In the first book, entitled “Called to Life,” the most obvious sacrifice for the sake of principles was made by Dr. Manette. He is imprisoned for eighteen years in the Bastille, for no apparent reason. Another notable sacrifice made for the sake of principle was made in Book Two, entitled “The Golden Thread,” also by Dr. Manette. Charles Darnay reveals the truth about himself and his family history. He tells Doctor Manette his true identity and that he is the heir of the Marquis St. Evremonde. In the third book, titled "Track of a Storm", Sydney Carton makes a surprising sacrifice for the sake of principles when he keeps his promise to Lucie Manette, his true love, that he will one day sacrifice himself for the person Lucie loves. In “Called to Life,” Doctor Manette makes a tremendous sacrifice for the sake of principles.
