How Far She Went by Mary Hood and Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield Synopsis 1. One of the most interesting literary selections in Perrine's Story and Structure was “ How far she goes" by Mary Hood. The setting of this story is set in a rural American town. There is the girl, whose name is never revealed and also the grandmother, whose name is never revealed. The girl is held at her grandmother's house against her will. Her father sent her to her grandmother without telling her she would stay forever. The grandmother is very critical of everything the girl does. He does not approve of any aspect of the girl's character. The girl feels the same about her grandmother. Neither character gets along. After an argument the girl runs away, disappointed by the surrounding circumstances. The grandmother continued to do her chores along the road of their large property when two motorcyclists roared by with the girl clinging to the back of one of them. After an argument the girl was forced to return home with her grandmother. Later while they were driving the two motorcyclists harassed their vehicle by throwing bottles and shooting guns. They ended up crashing their car and had to run into the woods and hide from the rowdy kids. They chose to hide under a pier. The dog didn't want to be quiet, so the grandmother had to drown it. The boys never found the girl and grandmother. The frightening experience strengthened the bond between the grandmother and the girl (Hood 121-129). Synopsis 2. Miss Brill has made it a routine for her to go out on these Sunday afternoons dressed in her best and go people watching. She sits where a live band plays, and next to her is the same old couple who always sit there every Sunday, and they never say a word.
