Topic > Interaction and self-control theory in the film...

Self-control theory suggested that people involved in criminal behavior believed that crime was an advisable way to satisfy their personal interests, which provided them a sense of pleasure immediately. Everyone has a different ability to control their impulses for immediate satisfaction, an ability developed mainly before puberty and relatively stable throughout life. The likelihood of engaging in criminal behavior was greater in people with low self-control than in those with high self-control. Furthermore, self-control theory suggested that the relationship between self-control and involvement in criminal behavior was less influenced by factors such as peer influences or cultural influences ( Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1990 ). Therefore, self-control theory is totally different from differential association theory. According to Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990), the main cause of children with poor self-control may be ineffective parenting. Parents should monitor their children, keep them under surveillance and actively react to inappropriate behavior. They should be able to recognize when deviance occurs, then punish and disapprove such misbehavior. If parents fail to do this, children may be born with poor self-control and therefore may be more likely to try hard.
