Topic > Analysis of Botticelli's Sistine Chapel - 1270

The Temptations of Christ are full of vertical lines that imply movement. The devil's hand seems to imply that it is actively tempting Jesus, rather than just being an image of the event. The Devil's angular body falling and Jesus pushing him away make it appear as if he is actively falling. This is achieved thanks to the diagonal lines used by Botticelli. The diagonal lines also help imply time, as it appears that Jesus and the devil are moving from one temptation to another. Use vertical lines as the angels tend to Jesus, which would imply rest. The center of the image has some movement, where some people appear to be running to get somewhere. Others stand straight, waiting to see what will happen with the holy man and boy at the center. All this movement in the image brings the story to life, rather than just images of an ongoing story
