The Adventures of Huck Finn by Mark Twain Summary of the book Aunt Douglas, who is a widow, tries to raise Huckleberry Finn, making him more civilized. To be civilized he is not allowed to smoke or swear and learns to read and write. He doesn't like his new life and decides to run away. Tom Sawyer, his best friend, manages to bring him back, promising to found a gang of thieves. During their adventures, Huck and Tom find a box full of gold. Soon after, Huck recognizes the footprints in the snow as his father's and realizes that Dad has returned to claim Huck Finn's money that he found after defeating Injun Joe. He quickly runs to Judge Thatcher and sells his share of the money in the amount of one dollar. Dad catches Huck, takes away his dollar, and threatens to beat him if he ever goes back to school. He is forced to live with his father, an alcoholic, but he has never truly loved him. Huck just can't stand it, because he is kept locked up by his father during the days and has to take care of him when he comes home drunk and a lot lately. After Huck appears to have been killed, leaving bloodstains, he flees to Jackson's Island in Mississippi. On the island he meets Jim, one of Miss Watson's slaves. He ran away because she sold him, as a result he was supposed to work on a plantation, but he ran away. Huck promises not to betray him and that he will go through hell to keep Jim out of slavery. A few days later Huck, disguised as a girl, sneaks into the village to get some information. While talking to a woman, she learns that both Jim and her father are suspects in her murder. The woman tells Huck that she thinks a slave is hiding on Jackson's Island. When Huck hears this, he immediately returns to Jim and together they leave the island on their self-made raft. Huck and Jim flow downstream, becoming close friends. Their goal is to reach Ohio, where slavery has been abolished and where Jim can be free and saved. After a boating accident, Jim and Huck get lost. Huck manages to reach the shore and tries to find help at the next house. From then on, Huck lives with the Grangerford family for a while.
