Compare the successes and failures of patriarchy in colonialism, in "The Storm", "Translations", and "Things Fall Apart".In "The Storm", “Translations” ” and “Things Fall Apart”, the theme of patriarchy is evident in various aspects. For example, patriarchy is present when Prospero controls and dominates Caliban and Miranda in “The Tempest.” Similarly, in “Translations,” the theme of patriarchy is also present with Hugh's rule over Manus and Manus' rule over Sarah. In "Things Fall Apart", patriarchy is also evident, seen primarily with Okonkwo controlling his wives and children. The writers highlight the theme of patriarchy in different contexts, due to colonization, such as the colonization of the Irish and Igbo tribes. This influences the success and failure of patriarchy as characters will have to act based on their environment and the conditions in which colonization occurs. Prospero and Okonkwo represent the patriarchal period of the time, while Hugh represents the ancient traditions. The way both authority figures dominate the lower classes is similar. They strongly adhere to the Great Chain of Beings, which categorizes a rigid religious hierarchical order, which sees women below men and beasts below women, so in both cases men have complete dominion. Prospero exerts his control through Caliban, with his crude use of language and his ability to make him complete household tasks, such as when Prospero tells Miranda that one of his tasks is to "fetch wood." Hugh uses exactly the same technique, forcing Manus to complete tame tasks, such as "bring him food - bring him drink". Both dominant figures subjugate the others, in order to increase their own social standing... middle of paper... the introduction of English forces introduces another level of patriarchy. It is clear that patriarchy is a dominant theme in both texts and embellishes the flow of each story with a unique approach. Despite all the similarities and differences between the characters, the successes and failures depend solely on the audience watching it.1. However, a Jacobean audience could sympathize with Prospero as he was an archetypal father and authority figure. He comments that it is "ok to be masculine and violent"3.
