Topic > The American Diet - 904

The average American eats approximately 2700 calories a day and 2 out of 3 adults are obese (Avena). Approximately 300,000 deaths occur each year due to diseases linked to our diet such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The American diet features an overabundance of foods full of artificial sweeteners and fried foods that is making Americans more overweight than ever. Americans spend an average of over $20 billion trying to improve their health and lose weight, but the fact remains that most of the country is still overweight (ABC). Even those who are not overweight are still vulnerable to the health risks of the average American diet. The term “skinny-fat” describes Americans who, although at a healthy weight for their bodies, have a high percentage of body fat and may still suffer from the same health risks as those who are overweight. The problem with the American diet is due to many factors, and its detrimental effect on the health and lives of many Americans can be boiled down to the GMOs and hormones that infest domestic products, the oversupply of processed foods, and the reluctance of government to intervene. Over 60% of the food in most supermarkets contains genetically modified organisms (Caldwell). In fact, 90% of corn produced in the United States is grown with GMOs, along with 93% of all soybeans and 90% of canola plants (Kelly). GMOs are “plants or animals that have been genetically modified with DNA from bacteria, viruses, or other plants and animals.” There is much debate about the dangers of GMOs and whether or not they pose a threat to human health, but there are studies that suggest that GMOs can be very destructive. According to the FDA, GMOs can cause “infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes to the gastrointestinal system” (GRACE). THE
