This article explores aircraft incursions onto runways. This article will discuss the definitions, categories, possible causes and ways of prevention through education and training The Tenerife disaster in the Canary Islands and the human factors involved. Runway raids are nothing new. Unfortunately, they continue to occur. Runway incursions happen for many reasons. DEFINITIONS Runway incursions have been and continue to be an inherent danger to aviation, regardless of whether it is a small airport, a large metropolitan airport, or the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. What is a trail incursion? Runway incursion means any event occurring at an airport which involves the improper presence of an aircraft, vehicle or person on the protected area of a surface intended for the landing and take-off of aircraft which may jeopardize flight safety. (FAAA, 2013). A surface incident is an authorized or unauthorized movement within the movement area that could compromise flight safety (Wells A and Rodrigues C, 2001). For example; an aircraft begins to reject before clearance to do so. The causes of these accidents are multiple, but one thing seems to be common: the lack of communication, which is a human factor. For something to be considered a runway incursion, an aircraft must do one of four things; an aircraft must be taking off, intending to take off, landing or intending to land and there must also be at least one aircraft, vehicle, pedestrian or object on the runway (Wells and Rodrigues, C 2001) . For example, a plane is at the end of the departure runway because the pilot has been given clearance by air traffic control to take off while another plane is in flight.
