In our glorious planet that we call home, environmental problems have become very real and relevant on a daily basis. As humans living on Earth, we must take immediate responsibility for our actions that have negative effects on this planet. Through our high energy demands, we have caused various problems with our environment. Our immediate need for fossil fuel energy harms not only our current environment, but will also affect the environment of future generations. By investing in renewable energy we can take small steps to get our environmental problems back on track. Solar energy, in particular, is today the most accessible and advantageous energy in the renewable energy economy. By first analyzing what these environmental problems are, we can take the next step and investigate what we can do to help our planet. Specifically, in the United States there has been an exponential increase in electricity consumption in recent decades. As technology advances, everyone feels the need to keep up with standards. But what comes from these new technologies is not as beneficial to the earth as it is to us. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently released a “Green Energy Buying Guide” explaining that our electricity is primarily produced through fossil or nuclear fuels that harm not only our environment but also ourselves. Some examples of fossil fuels are coal, natural gas and oil. These electrical techniques emit a lot of pollution and significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions (2). Looking specifically at coal, there are many ways in which it causes environmental problems. Herman Daly explains that to recover coal, miners must extract it from the earth, which can leave the surface with harmful problems. The remaining rock that was extruded with coal is now contaminated and left in piles
