ANIMALS SHOULD BE USED FOR RESEARCH Animal testing in scientific and commercial research has a long and controversial history. Some industries, for example, such as cosmetics manufacturers and pharmaceutical research companies, treat animals to test their new products. Animals such as rabbits, rats, monkeys and many others are experimented on in research tests. Animals are not only limited to product testing, but are also needed by biology students to study bodily functions, body parts, and practice surgery for learning and research. Animals are now protected by law; Known as the Animal Welfare Act 1966, this law regulates the treatment and protection of animals. “We have recently received the 2012 statistics for animals used in research under the Animal Welfare Act. Overall the number of animals used in research has decreased by 16% since 2010, falling from over 1.1 million (2010) to just over 950,000 (2012).” Animal testing has encouraged numerous results in solutions and ensures that products are safe and secure before treating humans. This development also has many advantages, but it also has a downside. Many people consider these practices on animals a cruel and indecent conquest. Animals should be used for research because animals suffer minimal pain and suffering during the research procedure. Animal research can be useful because we are genetically identical and provide us with cures for serious diseases (“American and Medical Science”). Science, medicine and animals invariably walk hand in hand. New drugs and medicines cure cancer and diseases that are tested on rats and mice. Because of the common factor genetically identical to humans, mice and other laboratory animals have been active in the development of organ transplants. In... middle of paper... Mal's health is monitored and procedures are followed accordingly. For any type of research, scientists use only healthy, well-nourished animals because testing unhealthy animals could lead to erroneous or fatal consequences (“Animal Testing”). People in today's society want the benefits derived and invented from animal experiments, however they also want animals to be treated well and suffer minimal pain and distress. Progression has its pros and cons. The quality of a healthier life comes from the meaning we attach to both people and the creatures of life. It makes no sense to sacrifice the health and well-being of future generations by not using animals for experiments and not finding cures for diseases. We can achieve this by managing animals with humane behavior and treating them with advanced technology and medicine.
