Assaults on correctional officers in prison are not uncommon. Aggressive inmates must be kept under control, which can sometimes lead to clashes between them and officers. According to SUNY Plattsburgh graduate Stephen C. Light, "the sample consisted of 694 incidents of prisoner assaults on offices that reportedly occurred in 31 New York State prisons" (Light, 1991). The amount of assaults against officers shows how violent inmates can become. Over 600 assaults in 31 different New York state prisons show one of the many difficulties and challenges that come with being a correctional officer. Prison cells and residential areas are two places where inmates spend most of their time. These areas are the ones where the most frequent outbreaks of aggression occur (Light, 1991).
