These critics are labeled New Critics because they examine the novel and the writer's works through a new critical, or formalist, perspective. The literary theory of new criticism is the theory that a novel, a poem, or any work of art should be studied exclusively on its own. This means that it examines the theme, symbolism, language and style of the piece. It is not necessary to know additional information related to the author's life to understand its true meaning. Take for example the fact that the main character's real name is Bromden, yet he is called "Chief Broom" by the nurses and Ratchet throughout the novel. This almost seems to define Bromden as both an Indian and a mere “stick object.” Another aspect of the new criticism that will be shown would be that of imaginary characteristics and reality. These characteristics are presented during Bromden's dreams as he knows the reality he faces, but still imagines that his reality could be better. Bromden often tries to escape his reality through flashbacks and images from his childhood and early adulthood. Perhaps it can be inferred that Bromden's escape from reality is the underlying reason that allows him to suffocate McMurphy and finally escape from the asylum. All these specific
