Topic > Advantages and Disadvantages of School Uniforms

Public school districts across the United States look for different ways to improve their schools so that students can receive the best education possible. They try to change things like the teaching schedule, the number of hours in a day, and even some classroom rules that students have to follow. But one topic that always comes into discussion is whether or not students should be required to wear school uniforms. When addressing this topic it is always a heated debate as opinion on whether or not to require them is usually evenly divided. Requiring students to wear uniforms to school can cause a variety of different problems, but it also gives students the opportunity to earn a better learning environment. In 1996, President Bill Clinton gave impetus to the school uniform movement when he said, “If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms." President Clinton, along with a handful of people, believed that requiring students to wear uniforms would eliminate many problems in schools. Problems such as the promotion of gangs, peer pressure from fashion, identifying intruders, economic and social barriers in school and improving attendance Parents and district office leaders believe that school is a place to learn and not a place to show off your different fashion styles and. your wealth Unfortunately, modern students spend so much time worrying about being the popular kid, that they stress themselves out so much that they are mentally exhausted to learn anything. School uniforms would make students relive all the pressure they are under to look good and be... middle of paper... they just cause more problems than there already are. Coming from a school that doesn't require uniforms, it forces me to see all the wonderful benefits of being able to choose what to wear on the first day back to school and having the choice to dress comfortably as you want if you're having a bad day. Uniforms are just a waste of money for students and parents who choose to attend public schools. While requiring uniform at school has its advantages, it comes with many more disadvantages. In the years to come the question of whether or not uniform should be compulsory will always be a top priority in a school. Ultimately, it will depend on the parents and the dress code they want their children to wear to school. All schools want is to improve students' education, and their best chance will be to not require school uniforms.
