To fully appreciate the role of the sacraments in the path of the Scriptures' way of salvation according to John Wesley's sermons, we must come to some important understandings. We must examine and work to understand Wesley's way of salvation. We must also work to understand Wesley's views on the sacraments of baptism and communion. Finally, having completed both of these crucial steps, we can move on to finally understand the relationship that Wesley established between these two through his preaching. When you begin to work to understand Wesley's Scripture Way of Salvation in his sermons, perhaps it is best to begin with his sermon entitled The Scripture Way of Salvation, preached in 1765. And if salvation is a continuous process, then one could potentially assume that there must be other things continually happening in the course of it. Wesley notes, however, that he is actually only focusing on the idea of salvation that the "Apostle" talks about, which is made up only of justification and sanctification. Wesley explains justification as God's forgiveness of sins once we have accepted God and then come to know the peace of God and the joy therein. He then goes on to explain what sanctification is
