Over the years English has unquestionably achieved the status of a global language and is commonly characterized as a lingua franca. It has become the language spoken by millions of people around the world; as a native language, as a language used for international communication and as a language learned in millions of schools. Why has English as a language become a global language? By researching this topic, the answers to this question can be found in the global power that the British Empire and the United States have had throughout history, especially since World War II (David Crystal, English as a Global Language, 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2003). . Most of the improvements essential to humanity have their roots in English-speaking areas and that is why English dominates the world in medical research, technological innovation and rock 'n' roll. To visualize “global” as an adjective in the “global language” collocation, a study showed the number of people who speak the language. According to them, there are about 6000 languages in the world and it is no coincidence that English is at the top of the list of the most dominant. There are 375 million first language speakers in the world, about the same number of second language speakers, and about 750 million foreign language speakers (David Graddol, The Future of English? A Guide to Forecasting the Popularity of the English Language in the 21st century. British Council, 1997). According to the Economist magazine, more than one billion people speak some form of English. These numbers might make you think that English is truly taking over the world, which can be both good and bad. On the one hand, one of the negative effects I find...... middle of paper......foreign language. Nowadays, young people find career opportunities abroad with the great help of English which allows people to expand their desires and dreams, to think outside the box and go for something different somewhere else, somewhere far away if you want. There are advantages and disadvantages, there is a need for an international language for communication, politics, economics and security and English is the best “linguistic candidate” for that function. English is a widespread language throughout the world and is used by millions and millions of speakers. In my opinion, people should use English as a tool to communicate with all cultures, but every country must maintain its own culture and language is an important part of it. In conclusion, language defines the identity of a country and everyone should maintain their own language and explore others.
