Sexual harassment has been present in the workplace for years in our society. The use of sexual harassment in the workplace was most remembered as a weapon used to keep women in their place, which would cause them to miss out on promotions within their organizations. It was once believed that women were the only victims, but now that is changing: men also report being victims of sexual harassment at work. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed and employers began to recognize that they were responsible for two types of sexual harassment. The first type of harassment is Quid pro quo when a supervisor offers sexual advances to the employee to get or keep a job, and this harassment is also used to determine whether an individual will get a promotion. The second form of harassment occurs when superiors or colleagues make working conditions hostile and unbearable. In either case the legal implications will cost an organization a financial loss in terms of productivity, time and money. During this research I discovered that it is in the company's best interest to provide a clear policy on sexual harassment. The issue of sexual harassment has been faced by women and has been an unspoken taboo for many years. Sexual harassment was not uncommon in the workplace: women were known to be sexually harassed. Sexual harassment was common from male colleagues and supervisors. As women enter the male-dominated workplace, sexual harassment has increased. In 1991, women began to speak publicly about sexual harassment issues, and much of this progress was due to the hearings of Professor Anita Hill and Judge Clearance Thomas. Sexual harassment against women has been widely practiced but unfortunately ignored in... middle of the paper ...the tendency of administrators to consider sexual harassment in the workplace as a serious problem within the company. The Human Resources Department should provide all staff with a clearly written company policy on sexual harassment. When staff members follow the rules and understand company policy, sexually harassing behavior is unacceptable. The organization's productivity and employee morale will increase, which would help make the company more effective and efficient.
