The Great Depression is the time when the film industry exploded with new types of films such as: gangster films and musicals. Both were born during the Great Depression. Most of the films show the difficulties of that period. Some films show this very well, for example Modern Times with Charlie Chaplin. One of the most famous gangster films was The Public Enemy. These films have very different views of the time period but still have things in common. This article will compare Modern Times and The Public Enemy. Modern Times, was produced in 1936, was written, directed and starred Charlie Chaplin. This movie was about the little wanderer trying to get a feel for modern times. The film begins in a factory where the Tramp works. He works on an assembly line until he has a nervous breakdown and goes on a rampage around the factory until he is arrested and sent to prison. While he is in prison, the factory where he worked is closed due to strikes. When he is released, he tries to be put back in prison because he has a place to live, have food, he knows it will be better because if he is in prison there is no problem in there. When he is released from prison, he saves a girl and begins a cohabitation with her. The little tramp is now trying to find a job. He got a job at a shopping mall but while he was working there the mall was raided. The thieves were trying to get food and a place to sleep. At that time, it was difficult to get money to get food and a place to stay, so people started stealing again to think about the bad times. He also lost his job. After that, the girl the Tramp is with finds a house, it's a small wooden shack that's falling apart. This shows that there are many improvised accommodations during that period. After that, the Lit...... middle of paper...... do their duty and send the Little Tramp to prison who gets even the smallest thing wrong. In The Public Enemy, it was different. There weren't many scenes with law enforcement, this showed that the law can stop gangs unlike other gangster films of the time. Another major difference was that The Public Enemy showed that most of society was middle class, unlike modern times where almost all of society was trying to survive. The Great Depression is where the film industry exploded with new types of films such as: gangster films. and musicals. It was a difficult time for people of this era to move forward. Most people spent their time watching movies such as: gangster films, musicals, and comedies, such as Modern Times and The Public Enemy, to get away from the bad times of the Great Depression. Each movie showed the Great Depression in different ways, but either way will work.
