He speaks with some innuendos and phrases that show the audience that he is well educated on the topic he is talking about. He says that, “Who knows the power of the wrath of God” (Edwards 43)? This is an allusion to Psalm 90:11 in the Bible and he simply assumes that his readers are aware of what he is referring to when he says this. Since Edwards was a respected preacher of the time, the sermon meant more to the people because of his qualifications and experience ("Using" 14). Furthermore, throughout his sermon he refers to an event of that time known as the great awakening. Speaking of this Edwards stated: "Many come every day from the east, from the west, from the north and from the south; many who were lately in the same condition as you are, are now in a happy state, with their hearts full of love for him who loved them" (Edwards 44). He told them about the others who have already come and converted to Christianity and hopes that by showing them the others who have also come they will change their ways and convert.
