Every day people judge each other based on their differences. Sometimes it is done unconsciously; sometimes it's done on purpose. In the book The House of Sand and Fog, by Andre Dubus III, two different cultures were represented; Kathy represented the culture of Western civilization, while Behrani represented the culture of the Persians. People judge each other based on unimportant things and are also judged based on those same things. Two cultures were used to amplify how different their cultures were from each other. Throughout the book cultures expressed what they didn't like about other cultures by making judgments about people based on ethnicity, appearance, and status; despite how different the cultures were, they had something in common, negative judgment. In a world where there is so much diversity, the only way for all cultures to get along is to put aside judgments and accept differences. The book is introduced with Behrani passing judgment on the people he works with. Judge other people based on their race and status. Behrani refers to the men she works with as if they don't even deserve to be in her presence. "He's goh, the shit of life. They're all goh," (p. 16). Although many of the men he works with do not deserve to be thought so lowly, Behrani judges them as he would if he continued to hold the position he held in Iran as a colonel. Behrani and her family also judge Kathy because she is American. When Behrani explains to his son the situation their family is now a part of, he explains it in a way that judges Americans. He says: "Remember what I told you about many Americans: they are not disciplined and do not have the courage to take responsibility... middle of paper... g, as in the book House of Sand and Fog Much of the result of the book was based on the fact that judgments had been made, if a judgment had not been made on status, Kathy might not have cared so much about getting that house back, if Behrani had not been judged on status, she might not have bought that house. Cultures judge each other every day, and people within those cultures also judge each other. This constant judgment of others and of themselves is what makes people unhappy in the first place way to live happily within your own culture, and in the world of many cultures, is to accept that every culture and person is different, which is what makes every culture and person so special, is to accept and embrace the differences; Works Cited: Dubus, Andre The House of Sand and Fog.
