On Tuesday, February 18, 2014, I had the honor of listening to John D. Zeglis. Zeglis shared his perspective on leadership and the different principles he believes constitute leadership. He has extensive experience in the telecom industry and also has a legal background that has helped shape him into the person he is today. Zeglis did not always maintain the same profession throughout his life. He began his professional career as an associate and was a partner in the law firm. Effective January 1, 1984, he joined AT&T as corporate vice president. Zeglis was named executive vice president of AT&T in 1986. While retaining that title, he held a series of executive positions before being elected vice president in June 1997. That same year, he was named president of AT&T. In December 1999, Zeglis was elected President and CEO of AT&T Wireless Group, until his retirement in November 2004. As part of his many roles at AT&T he held various responsibilities, including focusing on law, regulatory, government affairs, human resources, public relations, and strategy. He is currently the founder and owner of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants NBA D-League basketball team. He began his presentation by sharing with the class that there is no book or model to inspire them to become a leader. He suggested listening to others' experiences about leadership, then turning them into something of your own and making your experience unique and different from others. When I heard this I found it extremely helpful to know that there is no exact rule that I should follow if I wanted to become a good leader in the future. John D. Zeglis divided his presentations into two parts. He first highlighted five different components of… middle of the paper… the most difficult principle is learning to fail. I know this is extremely difficult for me because I wanted the best and I don't want to disappoint. I just have to remind myself that one is perfect and it's important to make mistakes. Zeglis also said to browse leadership books, but master the masters. Another important principle he mentioned was eating, sleeping, breathing and living values. Don't just say you'll do something, make sure you do it. Finally, his final principle of leadership advice is to remember who got you there. Our past is different for a reason, but it ultimately helped us all along the way. That said, I believe John D. Zeglis is a very influential person. Hearing his leadership principles really opened my eyes to what leadership is. Many of the members were even related to my life.
