Making Hard Choices in The Grapes of Wrath In literature as in life, people often find that they must make difficult choices to survive. The reasons behind their decisions and the results of their subsequent actions influence our opinion of them. In Grapes of Wrath, written by John Steinbeck, the author portrayed situations involving two main characters. The nature of their choices, the reasons behind their decisions, and the outcomes that followed influenced them greatly. However, the choices they made were successfully overcome. But Joad and Tom Joad are two strong characters who have overcome difficult situations. Their powerful characteristics helped encourage those in distress. In fact, one of the main characters involved in a difficult situation was Ma Joad. She was a wife and mother whose only occupation in life was as a homemaker. But Joad was furious with this idea. He pulled out a jack handle and said, “'You did this without much thought. What do we have left "in the world"? Nothing but us. Nothing but people... And now, right now, you want to tear people to pieces" (Steinbeck 218). But J... in the middle of the card... can make a person do incredible things.
