Smoking marijuana, having premarital sex, drinking alcohol while underage, participating in community service, and getting good grades are all acts that can fall under the division of lewd or positive behavior which are been glorified by today's youth and adolescent society. Through the media, social networks and authority figures, today's youth have been influenced by the classic and ageless art of peer pressure. Peer pressure as defined by (dictionary.com) is “a social pressure from members of one's peer group to take a certain action, adopt certain values, or otherwise conform in order to be accepted.” Causes and effects have a much greater effect on teenagers than any other demographic. Hours spent with other teens greatly increase the chances that they will be more susceptible to doing things that often go against their character and/or beliefs. Succumbing to peer pressure comes from a lack of confidence, insecurities, and eternal actions to impress their peers and authority figures. Teenagers often feel forced to leave their comfort zone to adapt to the "status quo" created by modern society. Today's law has made imitation of acts considered "cool" acceptable. The human condition naturally desires to group together for safety and security and to feel a part of something that is larger than one individual. Often, if an individual is too different from the peer group, he or she may no longer belong and may end up exiled from future commitments within the group. Because of incidents and exiles like this, people within a group will try to conform to the group's attitudes and behaviors and put their personal identity at risk. Having specific goals will create a sense of urgency and independence. Goals need to be focused on things that really impact the person. For example, the latest Michael Jordan shoe trends are hip and trendy, but you may want to reevaluate your goals and how you will spend your money. Peer pressure is a daily obstacle that you have to face every day. Throughout history, society begins to conform and lose their identity as individuals.
