This essay will investigate a variety of different approaches to the use of film by both Forced Entertainment and Frantic Assembly. Both companies claim to produce energetic, memorable and contemporary theatre, and both have incorporated the use of cinema into their works. Although Frantic Assembly and Forced Entertainment both produce work that falls under the umbrella of physical theatre, their way of working and the work they produce differs from that of other theater companies who also adopt this title. The two companies I will discuss have differences and similarities in their approach to using film, and both have incorporated it into their practices in innovative ways. From using real moving film in their stage performance, to exploring the different elements of film and exploring the ways in which those same principles can be adapted to the stage. Frantic Assembly and Forced Entertainment claim to create innovative theater that can entice and shock viewers. Their works demonstrate that both are constantly exploring to push and overcome the boundaries of how theater is seen today. Both Frantic Assembly and Forced Entertainment have always created influential, contemporary theatre, so it's no surprise that their use of cinema has had a major influence on their works. I think the work has political and social concerns that emerge from the process and the way we work rather than political and social concerns that are fixed. (McGuire, 2008) Like Frantic Assembly, forced entertainment devises work that is in keeping with the times and everyday life. Since technology plays an important role in modern society, the use of film is often demonstrated in their work. In addition to using film on stage, Forced Entertainment extends the use of film into the rehearsal process. Trying to record exact combinations
