Not only did sex sell, but it also had to attract a new audience as Coca-Cola had become a soda. At the time, Coca-Cola continued to appeal to men, but not to workers who drank a beer after a hard day's work. They began to attract younger men who were starting to date at the time and had more interest in women and men who couldn't drink alcohol at the time. In 1979 Coca-Cola had a new slogan, “Have a Coke and Smile.” In one of their advertisements Coca-Cola had three gentlemen offering a beautiful young woman a cold drink of Coca-Cola straight from the refrigerator. Basically saying/proving that giving a woman a Coke will make you the girl and be happy. Knowing that some men were trying to attract women, Coca-Cola took advantage of this and showed them a way to win over women by advertising the drink. Not only that, but how smart of them to launch their new slogan "Grab a Coke and Smile" without having to write it all down in the ad. Deceiving the consumer into thinking that "Have a Coke" was just part of the advertisement by making it appear that this is what the gentlemen are telling the girl.
