Moving From Me to We in The Grapes of Wrath The play, The Grapes of Wrath, explores how the Joad family adapts to a new reality, as their concern changes from their own family and their problems, to other families and their difficulties, until their concern includes all migrants and the larger problems of unemployment and prejudice. The Joad family's trip to California leads to the breakup of their family. The very first cause of the disintegration of individual families was the loss of their lands. The Joad family had lived there for many generations and had very strong ties to the land. Losing the land was equivalent to losing the family history. This is expressed by “He puts them in his pocket, closes the box, stands up and resignedly throws the box into the fire” (Galatians 21). It is very evident that Mom is reluctant to let go of her past. During the journey they lose the first member of the family, Grandpa Joad. This shows that there is a strong bond between a man and his home. Grandfather's great longing for his homeland ultimately led to his death. The transition from individual thought to widespread thought is most directly visible in Tom Joad's actions. At the beginning of the play Tom is primarily concerned about his own well-being. He wants to make up for all the things he missed while he was in prison. Later in the play he becomes more concerned with the well-being of people. Then, eventually, his thoughts shifted to trying to do what's best for all migrants by helping them organize to go on strike. Casy also anticipated trouble down the road, but the family continued to pursue westward anyway. When Casy states “I'm completely worried. I have observed... middle of paper... any other person in the same situation. Eventually, Ma realizes that family no longer comes first, but anyone who just needs help should come first. Everyone has had a change in thinking - sometimes it takes a tragedy to make you see things in a new and different way.1. You should include a concluding paragraph in your article. A conclusion summarizes what you discussed in your article. In one sentence each describe what you wrote in each paragraph. Then combine all these thoughts into one sentence to conclude your article. The concluding paragraph begins specifically with each theme but expands, toward the end, to include each theme.2. Also always make sure to cite every quote. Make sure you have the author and page number each time.
