But on the morning of August 10, 1991, everything changed in the blink of an eye. A temple worker who was delivering food that morning felt a strange sense of silence. He investigated the temple to find anyone who was awake. When he arrived, the monks were usually already awake and carrying out their daily chores and activities. But this was no ordinary morning. As the temple worker entered the living room, he couldn't believe what he saw. The six monks who lived there, along with a nun and two teenage temple servants, lay incredibly still in front of the sofa in the center of the room. He immediately contacted the police and was shocked by the massacre scene he had just witnessed. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was the first to respond to the scene. They immediately called for reinforcements to try to preserve the scene. The FBI was also called into question for possible connections with drug trafficking from Thailand. The monks were from Thailand, so it was possible that this massacre had something to do with illegal drug trafficking. There were so many questions about why? Why these people? Why here? Everyone in the area knew that the Buddhist temple was the calmest and most relaxed place in all of Goodyear, Arizona. That's why almost everyone was confused when they heard the news of the massacre. The lead investigator was Tom Agnos. He, nor anyone else in the state, had ever had to try such a terrible and devastating crime against humanity. According to…half of the document…intense hours of interrogation, the person being interrogated could simply tell the police what they want to hear. This is a morally wrong way for authorities to conduct interrogations; they just want to place the blame on someone as soon as possible to restore peace in the community. Not another month has passed and nothing has happened in this case. On October 24, 1991, the ballistic laboratory reports of the weapon found in Caratachea's car arrived. They confirmed that .22 caliber bullet casings found at the scene of the massacre matched those fired from his weapon. Authorities then recovered a search warrant to search the apartment where Caratachea lived with Jonathan Doody along with Alessandro Garcia. A 20-gauge rifle was found in their apartment, then compared with the 20-gauge shell casings found at the scene of the massacre.
