No conflict has ever been as explosive or long-lasting as that between Israelis and Palestinians. After hundreds of years of alternating Israeli and Palestinian power in Palestine, the two cousins reach conflict in the twentieth century. Who really owns the land of Palestine? This question has led to years of bloodshed and terrorism. Resolving an issue as complicated and intricate as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict requires in-depth knowledge of the history of both sides. In my opinion, the best solution to resolve the conflict is to resolve it through a peaceful two-state solution. The development of this solution can be described more easily if the conflict is broken down into solvable parts. Although both the Israelites and Palestinians claim their right to the land, deciding who rightfully owns the disputed territory must be viewed from both sides of the story. The conflict between land ownership can be seen as early as the late 19th century. During this time period the Palestinians were under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and claimed to be part of the Arab territory under Ottoman rule, including modern Palestine. Unfortunately, the Jewish people also had their sights set on Palestine. With the help of Austrian Jewish journalist Theodor Herzl, the Jewish people began to develop Zionism, or “modern Jewish nationalism, which is also an idea of an eventual return to the Holy Land” (Virmani, 2010). The Zionist movement received great political and monetary support during this period, and the general principles for the creation of a Jewish state were slowly developed.
