Topic > The importance of the teacher-student relationship in…

Teaching is a 24/7/365 profession where teachers prepare to educate and help students to advance in life. However, there are some teachers who accept 24/7 and 365 working hours differently. Parents expect teachers to do their jobs ethically and hopefully have their children's best interests in mind. But there are many situations in which teachers fail not only their students but also the adults who leave their children in their care. A teacher's job is to shape the minds of young adults through education but not sexual contact with each other. I hate it when a teacher makes a mistake that causes us to look at all teachers. There are some teachers who build productive relationships with their students and help them succeed not only in the present but also in the future. There are also teachers who take the wrong path and take advantage of the fragile minds of their students. Teachers should be seen as role models and not as someone our children must fear and who does not have their best interests at heart. Teachers should use ethical judgment when creating a teacher-student relationship. I believe that teacher-student relationships can be very beneficial to young minds. Some teachers go above and beyond what is asked of them, and when a teacher acts in an ethical and moral manner a teacher-student relationship is a win-win for everyone involved. Some would say that teachers spend more time with students than parents. Although some level of attachment to faculty is important for students' professional socialization, excessive and/or inappropriate attachment can be intimidating due to the deferential power between teacher and student. Inappropriate relationships can cause discomfort with students in......middle of paper......profession. But cases in which teachers have been inappropriately involved in inappropriate teacher-student relationships demonstrate that many teachers have no morals or ethical standards that they cannot live up to. When a teacher is selfish and does not show compassion or care for the students he or she is assigned to mentor, it causes an imbalance in how society looks at teachers. From the students' point of view they have the right to be protected by those who have assumed responsibility for teaching. When that relationship is denigrated, the student questions his or her own ethical beliefs. Even if a teacher is found guilty, there is no justice for a student who has suffered mental and/or physical abuse. The only thing that society benefits from is learning that a teacher has no moral value and will hopefully be removed from his profession.
