So there is great cultural value in this piece. At the conception of the piece, Mozart's cultural environment was one of turmoil. Since it is a mass, the cultural and spiritual aspects are intertwined. The text of the mass provided the spiritual setting, while Mozart's creative nature brought the cultural one to life. Spiritual Value: The spiritual significance of this piece is enormous. Mozart himself was not well known for his choral productions; however this piece can be a testimony to Mozart's faith. Throughout this mass the listener can sense the turmoil that Mozart was going through. Each section is a dramatic rendition of a classic text. There is a key emphasis on both the dramatic and the dark. However, since it is a requiem, the dramatic part fits perfectly with the text. The sudden mood swings, from happy to sad, from hope to despair, are constantly felt by the listener. It is, however, a fearsome piece that deserves a place among choral masterpieces. Steinberg says, “Mozart begins the tuba mirum with a stern call in the trombone voice,” this is very indicative of the fact that the Last Trumpet calls the dead to judgment. From the beginning of the piece this is a somewhat contrasting piece. The text calls for an eternal piece, but Mozart contrasts it with a dark beginning.
