Topic > Bring Instant Replay to Major League Baseball - 1000

Major League Baseball (MLB) has been losing fans for several years. Average attendance at an MLB game has been declining for several years. If Major League Baseball wants to compete with the popularity of professional sports like professional football (NFL) and professional basketball (NBA), it must embrace some of the technologies that have made these sports so successful in recent years. Currently, MLB has a replay system used to determine home runs that are fair or foul, whether the ball actually left the field of play, or whether the ball was interfered with by a spectator. MLB should have an instant replay system that can be used for all judgment calls excluding ball and strike calls. MLB could adopt a policy similar to that of the NFL where the manager is given a certain number of challenges that he can use to begin the instant replay process, i.e. limiting managers to two or three challenges per game. MLB may also consider adding an extra umpire to help with the replay system and reduce the time spent on challenges. The challenge of implementing an instant replay system in MLB has the potential to impact the speed of the game. This has been one of the main arguments against replay in MLB by baseball purists. Purists seem to appreciate the human and the errors that arise from human judgments that impact the game. Purists do not seem to want to embrace emerging breeding technologies in an attempt to get the call correct because breeding would interfere with the human element purists embrace. “Baseball's lack of instant replay is one of those crises, and simply huddling over a ball and pretending a problem in 2011 doesn't exist because it didn't exist in 1911 is p... paper......services.
