In Micheal Ondaatje's novel Anil's Ghost, characters develop deep relationships and reveal dramatic secrets through a series of traumatic events. Anil's Ghost is set in a time of political conflict in Sri Lanka, revealing unending mysteries, murder and brutality. Each character discovers the truth about each other, taking pieces of their lives, to reflect on various difficulties. During the civil war era, the protagonist, Anil Tissera, a highly specialized anthropologist, is sent to uncover several murders that have occurred in her country. Sri Lankan. During his various discoveries, he reflects on his life and discovers some of its darkest secrets. One of them starts with Cullis. He is a writer but also a married man. When she was with him, all she could trace were her memories, portrayed in the scene where she films her lover while he sleeps. He relies on science and photographs to determine the truth. The less he saw Cullis, the more his desire for him grew. During Anil's stay with Cullis in Borrego, she encounters a serious conflict with him at the hotel. Cullis grabs Anil by the hair and threatens to never lose contact in their bewildering love. Making her feel constrained in his tight grasp. Anil, frightened, releases his fury by plunging a small knife into his right arm. He showed no hesitation while committing such an act. Ondaatje quotes the end of their relationship as saying, "She looked at his face, at his gray eyes (they were always bluer in the daylight) and saw the softness she had accepted in her appearance when she was forty, suddenly disappear" ( Ondaatje 100). The knife ended their complicated relationship. Later, Anil reflects further back only to find out...half of the paper...but her predicament was to sacrifice herself to save Gamini from Sarath. Gamini sleeps in the emergency room to be close to Sarath's wife. Interpretation of the scene where Gamini watches her take her last breath in the emergency room. Sarath on the other hand doesn't talk about his dead wife and Gamini due to the embarrassment it would cause. The Sri Lankan conflict is the backdrop to the real conflict, a conflict of souls or "ghosts" in Anil's past. The characters in Ondaatje's epic novel Anil's Ghost are in revolution. From Anil's secret affair with Cullis, a destroyed marriage and his test of faith in Sarath. Followed by Gamini to discover the secrets of his lost relationship with his brother and love for Sarath's wife. The ghosts of Anil, Sarath and Gamini are revealed through their personal revolution. They could solve their revolution while Sri Lanka rages.
