LibyaLibya is located at the northern tip of Africa and along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This fairly large country is also known as the Libyan Republic. Libya has 3 provinces and 22 districts, which would be equivalent to the states of the United States of America. Libya has had a very controversial history. Varying from the rule of Muammar Gaddafi's dictatorship and numerous terrorist attacks, to the quiet lifeless desert that makes up most of the country. The population of Libya is 6,244,174 people (Factbook 1). The country's official language is Arabic, but Italian and English are also widely understood throughout the country's urban regions (Factbook 2). The Muslim religion represents 97% of the population, Christianity represents 2%, and other religions such as Hindu and Buddhist represent less than 1% of the population (Factbook 2). Libya operates under a government in transition (Factbook 3). Since 1969, Libya was under the control of Muammar Gaddafi and a dictatorship as a government (BBC 1). In 2011, Gaddafi was killed by the same Libyan rebel forces and in 2012 a new president was elected (BBC 1). Libya now operates under a democratic government. Libya's economy is heavily dependent on oil extraction and gas production (LIbyan Culture 4). These two main components of the Libyan economy account for 96% of exports and 98% of government revenue (Libyan Culture 4). In Libyan culture, marriages are arranged by the parents of the girl or boy (Libyan Culture 5). Furthermore, when the boy or girl has decided that they are ready to get married, they must marry someone from their family (Libyan Culture 5). Finally, girls can marry as early as fourteen, and boys must ... middle of paper ... yes, with people finally realizing that the misrule of their country had really reached the point close (BBC 2) .
