Skeeter is very tall with frizzy hair while her friends are all short with straight hair. In addition to her physical attributes, Skeeter is also much more modern than her very traditional friends. Skeeter has finished college and doesn't feel like she really needs a husband to make her life worthwhile, while her two best friends Elizabeth and Hilly dropped out of college as soon as they got a ring on their finger. Skeeter's relationship with Aibileen is also very different at the beginning of the novel; it's much more awkward and formal. "'Should we sit down?' I point to the kitchen table. Aibileen glances at the revolving door. 'Go ahead, I'm fine standing.'” Skeeter's motivation for writing is also very different at the beginning than at the end Mrs. Stein tells her that she needs to write about something new and something she believes in. She writes more to get published than to actually do work.
