Topic > The Negative Effects of Genetically Modified Foods

Dear Senator Stabenow, As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, I believe you are best placed to handle my complaint. America has become the land of the free and the sick. Americans have a higher disease and mortality rate than all European and industrialized countries. Since the creation of genetically modified organisms in the 1990s, the number of Americans with chronic diseases has doubled and the infant mortality rate has exceeded that of all other industrialized countries. While there are some reasons we might consider for this, the link between the disease and genetically modified organisms cannot be ignored. The world has made progress for better or worse, but one thing seems clear: If Americans want to survive and thrive, the use of genetically modified foods must stop and the organic lifestyle must continue. The diseases, allergies and mutations we see in the world today did not happen 20-30 years ago. Some of these are becoming a colossal epidemic. What has changed in our world so drastically to cause this is our food. Not just the everyday fast food that Americans have grown to crave and other unhealthy things we put into our bodies, but also the way our food is now grown. We have gone from naturally evolved foods to food created in laboratories. There are hundreds of millions of crops planted in the United States that are genetically modified and the regular consumer has no idea. To give you an idea, the USDA reported that genetically modified crops make up 93% of all soybeans, 86% of all corn, and 93% of all canola seed planted in the United States (USDA) .
