Doubt tells the story of a Catholic nun/teacher determined to determine whether the priest is having an indecent relationship with an African-American altar boy. This story is a classic tale of hidden scandals within the Catholic church, however the story focuses on the mystery of whether the priest is having an indecent relationship with one of the students. The script can be seen as a sort of Heroine's journey. The protagonist is Sister Aloysius, head nun and principal of the school of San Nicola. It deviates from the typical heroine character archetype, it is in tune with her animus. She diverges from the feminine qualities of sensitivity, emotional and weak. Sister Aloysius is tough, with a cold demeanor and a stickler for following rules. Through the dialogue Sister Aloysius appears to be pessimistic about society. She tells Sister James: “This parish serves Irish and Italian families. Someone's going to hit Donald Miller” (31). Understands the way society views race, children's views on race are a reflection of their parents' views. She assumes the worst in a situation, as this makes her assume that Father Flynn is having an indecent relationship with one of the students. Being a nun depends on her faith in God. In order for Sister Aloysius to prove Father Flynn's deception, she must "take a step to confront transgressions, you are taking a step away from God, but in His service." (32). This explains how far she is willing to go. This is also when Sister Aloysius accepts her call to adventure. Along the way he will have to overcome several tests. He has no witnesses, no evidence, but he has his certainty. Sister Aloysius' greatest trial is proof of this. He must break parish rules by questioning Father Flynn about his... medium of paper... indow(36). The branch scratching her window can be seen as her fears scratching her soul. The concern Sister James has for Father Flynn and Donald troubles her heart. Visually the film captures the dark tone of the script. The colors in the scenes are dark and blue with the characters wearing dark clothing. This demonstrates the seriousness of the topic, while also setting the tone. The performances in the film help create tension. Sister Aloysius's journey takes her out of the simplicity of her life. Throughout the journey he questions his faith. She breaks her morals, risking everything to uncover Father Flynn's secret. In the end he manages to make Father Flynn leave the parish. However, he is promoted to a higher level in the church. In fact, in the name of the film, all Sister Aloysius is left with are her doubts.
