Topic > The pros and cons of emotions in Othello - 1041

Human beings have pros and cons. The great thing is that we are capable of making great inventions. But when it comes to emotions that's when things start to get confusing. Our emotions play an important role in how we act towards our fellow humans. We humans have many types of emotions, we have anger, happiness, sadness, excitement and so much more. In the poem Othello, The Moor of Venice by William Shakespeare is set in Venice. It begins when Roderigo and Lago argue about Othello. Rodrigo is jealous because he is in love with Desdemona who is married to Othello and Iago is jealous because Othello has chosen Michele Cassio as lieutenant who has no experience in military life and Lago has a lot of experience. The reason is either because we don't know trust them or we got the news by hearing the information through someone else. When you hear it through someone else's mouth and you don't hear it from your loved one, it really makes you suspect your partner and you start to second-guess them. In Othello, this is exactly what happened. Early in the story, Iago admits that he heard rumors that Othello was having an affair with his wife Emily. For example, in the poem, Lago says “between my sheets 'He made my office. I don't know if it's true…” (1.3 390 ) .When Lago heard these rumors and how Othello would not take him as a lieutenant. It was then that the camel's back broke, it got to the point that Lago wanted to make Othello suffer, taking revenge on him by saying that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. Othello, however, says he wants proof by telling Lago “Because she had eyes and chose me. No, Iago; I'll see before I doubt; when I doubt, prove it; And on the evidence there is nothing else..." (2,3 189-191). When Othello says this to Lago, he realizes that he has put Othello on tiptoe to point out that it makes him paranoid about believing that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio from the evidence of Othello's handkerchief which had strawberries on it and which was placed in Cassius' room. Between Othello and Iago it is based on sexual suspicion towards their spouses but for Rodrigo it has sexual desire. For Rodrigo had sexual desire only for Desdemona. Lago takes this as an advantage and uses it against Rodrigo. The way Iago manipulates Rodrigo is by convincing him to sell his land, give Lago more money, or even get into a fight with a drunken Cassio. What Iago says to Roderigo is “Put the money in the bag…” (1.3 344). Lago realizes that to get Rodrigo to do what he wants, all he has to do is repeat himself a few times and Rodrigo will finally do what Iago asks him to do. As for Cassio, the way Lago gets it is by getting Cassio drunk and having Rodrigo go fight Cassio, which then follows a consequence for Cassio. Cassio then loses his position as lieutenant and during the time Cassio and Roderigo are fighting Iago stabs both men. Lago first stabs Cassio because Iago told Roderigo that he should kill Cassio, but once the soldiers start climbing the stairs Iago then switches from one side to the other making it seem like he was on Cassio's side the whole time stabbing Rodrigo . He then blames Bianca, Cassio's prostitute lover. At the end of this story we come to a very sad ending for Desdemona because at the end of the story she is killed by Othello because he suspected that she was having an affair with Cassio and tells Emily why Desdemona died.
