This is achieved through the close relationship of family members with the pediatric patient. Safety increases because family members are treated as part of the healthcare team and not simply as visitors (Moore, Coker, DuBuisson, Swett, & Edwards, 2003). Additionally, patients are able to communicate with staff about what they see happening to their child and make decisions about the treatments they want their child to receive (Moore et al., 2003). The contribution of the patient's family is very important to ensure patient safety because family members know the patient much better than medical personnel (IWK Health Center, 2016). This allows family members to more keenly notice changes in the status of pediatric patients and quickly alert healthcare providers. This could prove very useful when providing care to a pediatric patient in the ICU
