Cyrus was the host of the 2015 VMAs and gave a racist performance using black culture, a popular and trending culture in America, to promote herself as "wild and dangerous" by using blacks as “props” for slapping and twerking (Makarechi 2013). Therefore, Manji addressed her acceptance speech to Cyrus by calling her out on his liberal discussion of her in the media a few days earlier. Cyrus had said that Manji had herself to blame for not being nominated for best music video of the year alongside Taylor Swift and other artists (Feeney 2015). Manji pointed out how the entertainment industry singled out white artists to win awards and ignored non-white artists, even though their music was also very popular and deserved to receive awards. Additionally, Manji pointed out that if Cyrus wanted to appreciate black culture, she should also care about the black people who created that culture. Cyrus, however, refused to give an answer (Feeney 2015).
