Dave knows that with the idea of buying a gun, he couldn't talk to his father about it. Dave is intimidated by his father: “He didn't mention the money in front of his father. She would do much better by cornering her mother when she was alone” (369). When Dave is around his father he feels less in control of the situation, rather than with his mother he can deceive her. Dave knows that with his father around he won't be able to get the money for the gun. Dave takes control of the situation and isolates his mother in the kitchen to ask her for money, but sometimes she becomes a nuisance and worries about what her husband will say. Dave's mom is reluctant to give him the money at first, repeatedly asking questions and denying Dave access to his money. She hides it with ease: “She bent over, turned slightly to the side, raised the hem of her dress. He rolled down the top of the sock and pulled out a thin roll of beak” (370). The way Dave's mom hides the money demonstrates her distrust of Dave. He always keeps the money with him under several layers of his clothes, protects it with secrecy and shows his distrust in the way he tries to take it. Although he made it difficult for Dave to buy the gun at first, he eventually gave it to him
