I created Wanton Wandering as my first exploration of book arts. I was drawn to this because I've always liked creating works with a long process, works where I can really get both hands involved. I had already started to focus on printmaking and knew that I enjoyed the long process involved in making prints. I was also interested in creating multiples and creating monotype prints, or one-of-a-kind prints. When I started working on ideas for my first fiction book, I knew I would include my printmaking interests. I also knew that I would carefully consider reading as a personal and peaceful experience. It was through these thoughts that I developed Wanton Wandering. Wanton Wandering is an artist's book that creates a secret moment of flirtation with the reader, causing them to unconsciously read the abstract prints and text in potentially subversive ways hidden within the book; this was done by understanding the artwork as a book and treating it as such, developing a planned process and following it with careful selection of materials. First, Wanton Wandering is a book; it is a work of art that is presented as a book and therefore my every intent was to make it look like a book. When designing potential pages I consistently gave my pages the standard book size, and the final dimensions of Wanton Wandering are 5 x 7 inches. Maintaining a standard set of sizes and designing and binding the book like a traditional codex (i.e. the style of book found on the shelves of a bookstore or in your bookshelf, pages folded in half and then stitched together along the center edge). spine) I knew my book would be easily recognisable......in the center of the paper......fun within a serious book. I took the opportunity of the last pages to add a little levity in the hope that the little mental manipulation that happens within the book will be seen more as playful and not gimmicky. Wanton Wandering has been a long experience for me as an artist. I spent more time creating this book than other work I have created in the past, time that is not usually allocated to student work. Through the creation of Wanton Wandering, I was able to discover my deep interest and investment in the process and careful execution needed to create not only a work of art, but also an object. I have become more aware of my desire to consider the viewer's experience while viewing my work and how I need to present my work to best enhance that experience. Wanton Wandering will lead to many more books and viewer experiences designed by me
